The Towns of Shrewsbury, Grafton, and West Boylston are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Environmental Health Inspector to join our new Regional Public Health Alliance. Under the leadership of the Regional Public Health Director, you’ll play a key role in protecting and promoting public health across multiple communities through inspections, investigations, and education. This hands-on position ensures compliance with environmental and public health regulations related to food safety, housing, septic systems, pools, camps, and more. If you have a background in environmental or public health, a strong grasp of Massachusetts sanitary codes, and a passion for community well-being, we invite you to apply and make a regional impact.

What you’ll do:

  • Conduct inspections of food establishments, housing, septic systems, pools, camps, and other regulated sites
  • Investigate environmental and public health complaints and hazards
  • Support communicable disease case follow-up and foodborne illness investigations
  • Review and process permits for regulated activities
  • Prepare inspection reports, enforcement notices, and legal documentation
  • Educate property owners, businesses, and the public on health codes and best practices
  • Assist with emergency response efforts and public health outreach programs
  • Stay current on changes to state and federal health regulations and codes

Who you are:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, public health, or a related field
  • 1–3 years of experience in environmental health or regulatory inspections
  • Knowledgeable in Massachusetts sanitary codes and public health laws
  • Skilled in conducting inspections, interpreting codes, and documenting findings
  • Excellent communicator with strong customer service and conflict resolution skills
  • Organized, tech-savvy, and able to manage multiple tasks independently
  • Certified or eligible to become a Massachusetts Registered Sanitarian within two years
  • Holds a valid MA driver’s license and has access to reliable transportation
  • Ready to travel throughout the region and adapt quickly in emergencies
